Our experience with Dr. Allan De Caen is a belief he is one of the most truly exceptional physicians in the world. As an intensivist, we of course, met under extreme duress; yet our outlook is nothing but positive. His staff praises his work and commitment to patients. It is certainly not difficult to understand why he is held in such good regard by his colleagues (and our family): A gentleman who intuitively worked with all his might to save our child. He offered his expertise and comfort, hope, yet directness and willingness to educate us of the circumstances. We always felt his genuine concern amd could be certain that our child was in capable hands. When we had questions, he was there to answer – even when it was time for him to move on – he gave us more of it until satisfied that we understood and still continues to offer his help. Dr. De Caen treats people with respect and dignity. One can honestly see the pain he, too, feels with loss. We are humbled by love from the Stollery.

My husband and I were on-site of our 16 year old son’s dirt bike accident shortly after it happened. What we saw was any parent’s worst nightmare . .in an instant our life changed. It was Dr DeCaen who saved our son’s life when he arrived on-site via STARS. I still cry when I think of what he did for us. Our son suffered multiple facial fractures as well as a cricoid fracture. I remember in horror, the paramedics struggling to perform the emergency airway on our son . . Dr DeCaen arrived just in time via STARS to do an emergency tracheostomy. There is no doubt in my mind that it was Dr DeCaen’s initial management of this rare injury that had a tremendous impact on our son’s immediate probability of survival and his long-term quality of life. Dr DeCaen also showed genuine concern for my husband and I, when he told us that they would be taking our son to the U of A Hospital via STARS. We will be eternally grateful for Dr DeCaen’s compassion and skills as a Intensivist Physician.
