Worst hospital conditions and staff are wayyyy too overwhelmed and overworked

  • Anonymous

Stay away at any cost. Understaffed hospital
    Disorganized.
Doctor overwhelmed with “excess of patients” did not explain well my problem . I had to come back to clarify .Nurses with bad attitude trying to get rid of you on 2 minutes you are there (after 5 hours waiting outside).
Stay away. Google can help you better than RIH.
Time to FIRE the administration and to support doctors and some of the professional nurses.
Hospital is also dirty. A horrible example of waste of tax payers money ! The “new tower” is just a. Illusion of better health care. A joke

Where to start, this hospital is completely under staffed, and save for a few attentive and knowledgable staff, is entirely unable to handle anything other than surface level injuries, and sometimes not even that. Generally speaking nurses and doctors are dismissive and unhelpful, sending you home without treating or identifying root causes. It takes 3 or more trips to ER to finally get the adequate attention to your concerns. There is little validation to be had from majority of staff, as they are clearly over worked, and the good staff, under appreciated. It is a sad day when you have to advocate for a hospital just to do the bare minimum requirements of their role. Cleanliness is at a minimum, week long stays see the floor cleaned once, I have personally cleaned blood and other bodily fluids off of walls, stretchers and beds at various visits. Smoking is tolerated in non-smoking areas. Security allow homeless to occupy areas inside the hospital, pissing on themselves and wandering the halls touching other patients awaiting care. Advocating for your loved one after 9 hours of neglect will get you scolded and escorted off the premises. Hospitalist Dr. Tynan is another piece of work into himself giving this hospital a worse reputation. Discontinuing antibiotics for a sever infection, without ever meeting or speaking with the patient, discontinuing orders for pain management after explicitly stating he would not be changing any orders. He says one thing and does another, only to cause more problems, and more damage, without ever understanding the full scope of any one patients medical history. This level of ineptitude is appalling for a “medical professional” with that level of control over a patient’s care. Any complaints or feed back made to Interior Health go absolutely no where, with zero follow up. Truely terrifying. This hospital is poised to lose all of its competent and passionate employees to the private sector. Changes need to be made, this is wholly unacceptable.

Went for help after suffering for years due to chronic migraine, waited hours to be told to not come back unless I was having a heart attack or stroke. Wonderful!

No wonder it’s only a 2 star, this Hospital is very scary. They wouldn’t help me, and I had to check myself out of there it was that bad. Worse than a meat factory. I wouldn’t send my dog to this hospital.

This hospital is the worse in the world. Go somewhere else if you have to. I would never go here again, even if it was the last hospital on earth. Doctors and Nurses are plain dumb and know nothing.

I spent 5 weeks on Neurological and Rehab ward. The entire staff from cleaners to internists were so friendly and supportive. I give them 5 stars across the board.

To much to do with administration. Terrible parking facilities. Hallways in the units are used for storage and excess patients. Patients have to change their own sheets.Staff yelling at each other. Then there is the emergency department....what a joke .

I don't know if it's my luck or if it's me but my past 4-5 visits to RIH have been very good, right from the triage area to med imaging to lab to the kind passionate doctors and nurses in emerge. Nothing short amazing. I just recently had a trip to the “OR” and that too was perfect. I was wheeled into an operating room, was introduced to surgical assistant, anesthesiologist, the surgeon and there was a team of about 6-7 there.. They were very “ calming and reassuring . When I woke up in recovery the nurses were again “Super” making my visit very a good one. I can't say enough good things about the care I get when I go there. Maybe it my luck but I didn't win every race in my life ,so thanks to all the staff at RIH. Cheers to you all you have made a difference.

Had a recent and unfortunate experience in the ER at RIH. The first challenge is even getting to the ER area with all the construction going on. Too bad the ER wasn't prioritized over the other recent improvements. Triage was very good on this particular visit. The nurse was very kind and compassionate. I was apparently very sick because I got seen quickly. Where things started to go bad is with the nursing care while in the ER. I had a couple very caring nurses, but I also had a few that didn't seem to care how much pain or stress I was under. One nurse suggested that a child was able to handle having an IV inserted way better than I was handling it. My IV wasn't inserted correctly on 2 different occasions and it caused a lot of pain. My requests for making the process easier somehow were met with rude comments about it not being that bad and not worthy of anything for pain. I still have 4 large bruises on my arms to remember my horrible experience. And then there's the lack of privacy and the nurses and docs that speak loudly about patients who are literally a few feet away and separated by a curtain. A doc covering break (i think) was being updated on all the patients, me included. I heard everything. The nurse was talking about how I wouldn't like having to get another IV inserted and the doc said "if she doesn't do it she can leave". Um, ok. I wish I wasn't so weak and sick at that moment because I should've spoken up. But, I was also alone because my partner had gone home for a much needed rest. Word of advice...always bring an advocate to the ER with you. A friend, anyone if at all possible. There were a few very kind and compassionate nurses n docs. But sadly, it's the bad ones that leave a lasting negative impression. I'm absolutely terrified of having to return. I understand it's a difficult job in a stressful environment, but you're dealing with people in their most vulnerable state. Please reevaluate your suitability for working in healthcare if you were one of those chastising patients for being anxious and in pain and not being the perfectly quiet patient you'd hoped for.
