I am writing to bring to your attention my recent experience at the emergency room of Royal Victoria regional Health Centre. While I appreciate the efforts of the medical staff, I feel compelled to express my concerns regarding the level of service and the apparent lack of compassion during my visit.
On Saturday November 11th, 2023, I sought medical attention at the emergency room due to intense pain on my left-hand side. From the onset I encountered and observed instances where the staff appeared overburdened, frazzled and at one point the staff were complaining to each other about the number of patients they had to care for. I observed a patient helping another patient get up and slide into wheelchair so he could go to the bathroom, he asked for help from several nurses but received a curt and demeaning response of he needed to wait, after 30 mins pass the other patient help him.
A simple request such as asking for a blanket or vomit container were shrugged off by staff leaving patients talking among themselves about the very cold and impersonal treatment.
My primary concern, however, lies in the perceived lack of compassion exhibited by certain staff member. Empathy is a crucial aspect of healthcare, and unfortunately, I felt that her and mine interactions lacked the understanding and support that one would expect during a medical emergency visit. I do not like to feel like a burden and spoken to as if I’m wasting their time.
I believe that addressing these concerns with staff is essential for maintaining the high standard of care.

On Sept 17-’23 my 67 year old niece was taken by ambulance to RV hospital with a badly swollen & deformed knee she was unable to walk on. Also both her hands were numb & she was unable to hold onto anything. She was admitted for tests & found to have a broken knee but her numb hands diagnosis was ‘inconclusive’. She was referred to an orthopedic surgeon IN NOV. re: her broken knee and sent home. Over 9 months ago see also attended this hospital re: continuous severe pain in her hips & legs & she was referred to a rhuematoligist –that app’t was in 9 MONTHS ! During both of these visits to RV hospital she was not seen by an orthopedic surgeon or a rhuematoligist & recvieved NO treatment for her serious health problems. Her family Dr has now told her to attend another hospital & I’ve suggested Newmarket hospital as she’s still unable to walk & has no feeling in her hands!

Thought I was having a heart attack and sat in Emerg for 4 hours before being seen by a nurse to draw blood. In total, I was there for 8 hours. So many people there for coughs and flus – when they should have gone to walk-in clinic or their own Doctor’s office. Staff was relatively good, when I finally saw them. Next time, I’ll drive to another hospital, further away if I have to, so I don’t have to sit in an uncomfortable chair for so long.

Stay away from RVH if you can, even the staff would take a family member there, top half administration, do not donate

I will say, when I had my arthroplasty 3yrs ago, I had excellent care. What I’m still noticing are the number of people waiting in the ER each & every day. People…do you not have a family Dr. Can you not go to a walk-in clinic rather than clogging up the ER. The ER is for emergencies, not because you may have thrown up twice, or sneezed a few times. People have become paranoid over the slightest sensation they may experience. Do us all a favour & stay AWAY from the ER unless it is an emergency.

My day surgery, I was treated with respect, kindness and care. All the staff answered questions, gave directions , led me thru the process. Thk you Annie, Crystal, Corey and a young lady wheeling me out. You lowered my anxiety beyond words. Dr. Fefelova engaged with me before and after surgery. Thk you !!!

I have to ask WHY people are going to the Emergency Department when their situation is not an emergency. This clogs the Department very badly. I noticed over the Christmas & New Year weekends, the numbers were down...way down. You mean to tell me that people were feeling better during the holiday, yet when the holiday is over, suddenly then have to go to the Emergency Dept? I understand that a lot of people don't have a family doctor anymore, & walk-in clinics aren't "walk-in" anymore...they require an appointment, & if there are X-number ahead of you, you'll be asked to change your appointment. In instances such as this, I can better understand them going to the Emergency., but in all concienceness people, THINK before you take up room where someone else needs the service. Just yesterday, I checked the number of people in the Emergency Room....it was over 300! Really? the day after a holiday, people were going there in droves???? The numbers were much much lower after the holiday. It isn't any wonder a lot of medical staff are considering leaving their jobs. People abusing the system takes up valuable time.

My husband was taken by ambulance after vomiting for 3 days. Could not keep anything down. Everytime I called the hospital they said they were waiting on tests. He is diabetic & has other health issues. After spending the night at emergency they sent him home and never solved his issues. Now I have to take him to another hospital. Very frustrating.
