Would not go back if I had a choice. I think they are somewhat under-staffed. Care after surgery could have been a whole lot better. But I don’t yet know if others are the same – or better – or worse – so I can’t comment from a comparison point of view.

I recently spent 3 days here. It was the first time I have really been in a hospital as a “sick” patient. The nurses here from day one were so wonderful. Their professional manner and willingness to help was overwhelming. They always did their best to allow you to rest during the night rather than clanging equipment around and having loud conversations at your door. The work is hard and difficult, yet they always had a smile. I would definitely use this hospital again. However, my fear of needles keeps me away from most hospitals so I hope I am not back in the near future.

First lady I dealt with at the reception to check in was very rude and abrupt, snatching paperwork out of my hand, also extremely rude to other staff members, in front of patients! Coming round from surgery, recovery nurses were fantastic – my pain was 15/10 and they did brilliantly to calm me down. Sadly several nurses on the ward ruined by stay – denied me pain meds in first 24 hours without checking with my Dr, said I would be an addict if I took morphine for 2 days (I had major spinal surgery), gave me incorrect (and dangerous!) way to get in and out of bed given my surgery, told me it was “awkward” checking my catheter, one nurse even told me “you’re in hospital, we’re not here to be nice”! I had one beautiful amazing nurse who saved me but so disappointing that more of the nurses were not like her! Not sure I would return to this hospital if I required future in-patient treatments!

My 94 YO mother, suffering chronic leg ulcers, was turned away from St Andrews at 2am after waiting several hours to be treated. The treating doctor in emergency, Dr Craig Herron, was nothing short of arrogant and rude, even slapping my mother's leg in jest (after she had exhibited obvious and substantial pain getting herself on to the treatment bed). After being turned away, in disbelief my sister and I then took our mother to the Wesley hospital, where she was admitted to their rehabilitation ward for one month. We lodged a formal complaint with St Andrews and they apparently did not find any problem with Craig Herron's conduct. Seems like once you're a qualified doctor, you're never rendered unemployable again. Any wonder Craig Herron is working graveyard, emergency medicine – unemployable in private practice. Beware! I wouldn't take my pet to St Andrews.
