My father was in care at Westshore Laylum for 3 years, at both the old and new location. I can't say enough good things about the staff. They treated my father with dignity, kindness and compassion. Most importantly, he was content there. When my father was in his final stages, my family was treated with such care. I spent many nights with him and was touched how staff would come and talk to him, even the kitchen staff. They treated his last days with such care and love. When my Dad passed I truly felt they were as sad as I was.

My Aunt has been living at Westshore Laylum for a little over 4 yrs now and about 20 yrs ago my Grandfather was there for 6 yrs . Even though their stays at the facility were years apart my family feels they both received excellent care, we found the staff to be very caring and approachable. The building may be old but don’t but its clean and homey. I wouldn’t hesitate to
recommend WSL and to even place another family member with them if needed. I’m thankful for the care they gave my grandpa in the last years of his life and the care my aunt is still receiving!

I am stunned by the previous comments…. my mom has been a resident of West Shore Laylum for the past 3 years going into 4. She is cognitively and somewhat physically disabled and has been for all of her stay I know that she has received the best care possible based on the amount of staff that the government pays for. More would be better but that is no fault of this facility or their caring staff. The staff are accommodating to all of Mom’s needs even taking time to chat with me when I am sad seeing how Mom is failing. Our family attends this residence at least once per week on varying days to see Mom… we always comment on how well she is looked after. Mom can be very difficult to deal with from time to time due to her ongoing cognitive and physical deterioration…. that is why we cant look after her… we did try for at least 3 years… we are so appreciative of the care she is now receiving. Yes, the facility is older… but clean and maintained… I have a father in law in a new facility in Calgary…. he does not receive the same quality of care that Mom gets….a new facility means nothing… how the staff interacts with the residents is everything. I leave my name as I offer to discuss these concerns with anyone who may disagree with my comments. The managers can let me know your contact information and I will be happy to have a discussion. I recommend this facility to any family looking for a placement… it is so hard to do but this staff cares so so so much….. G. Smith

I totally agree with everything the other reviewers have stated about West Shore Laylum – it’s absolutely TERRIBLE. Avoid this facility at all costs. Fraser Health placed my father at this care facility in March, 2016. West Shore Laylum lost my father’s new hearing aids, 2 pairs of prescription eyeglasses, leather wallet, belt, shoes, hat, shirts and a number of other personal belongings. The management showed a complete lack of empathy and interest when we reported these items missing. BEWARE: There is absolutely no accountability or responsibility for the possessions of the vulnerable residents. Don’t expect any apologies when things “mysteriously disappear” either. WEST SHORE LAYLUM JUST DOESN’T CARE. How could so many things disappear in such a short period of time? Shame on Fraser Health for placing frail elderly citizens there and then not doing anything when concerns are raised. AWFUL EXPERIENCE.

My father spent only 9 months at West Shore Laylum. It is an old run-down, crowded building. During his stay, we found that his overall physical condition really deteriorated. To us he seemed over medicated, barely walking, no longer able to feed himself. Upon moving to another care Facility in Vancouver, his physical condition and energy immediately improved. He was walking and able to feed himself. We also discovered that while staying at West Shore Laylum, many of my father’s personal belongings mysteriously went missing. Numerous phone calls and emails regarding the missing items were to no avail. The staff and Management of West Shore Laylum showed a real lack of caring. We as a family heard nothing but excuses from Management. Never an apology! Seniors in care deserve better.

my elderly mom was put here after being in Delta hospital, it was unbelievably awful, it was dirty and smelly, residents sat around all day looking comatose half asleep in their chairs,
Mom was given a semi private room with a lady with severe dementia, it took us 3 months to get her moved out of there after much wrangling with fraser health, it was a horrible experience I would not with on any family, this place , it is old, filthy and reeks of urine, it needs to be torn down, a jail would have been better and likely cleaner. this is warehousing people at its worst. shame on Fraser health. mom would not be alive today if she had stayed there.
