📋Overview
Bilateral Acoustic Neurofibromatosis refers to the presence of noncancerous tumors called vestibular schwannomas on both vestibulocochlear nerves. This condition is currently recognized as a defining clinical feature of neurofibromatosis type 2, a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of multiple tumors within the central nervous system.
These growths develop from Schwann cells, which provide insulation and support for the nerves that transmit sound and balance signals to the brain. While these tumors are typically benign, their bilateral occurrence can influence neurological signaling and internal ear function.
