Budd-Chiari Syndrome
๐Overview
Budd-Chiari Syndrome occurs when the hepatic veins, which drain blood from the liver, become narrowed or blocked. This interruption of normal blood flow causes blood to back up within the liver, often resulting in liver congestion and enlargement of the organ.
The condition is also known as hepatic venous outflow obstruction and frequently involves the formation of blood clots. While it is rare, the resulting congestion can interfere with typical liver processes and may manifest in various clinical forms depending on the speed of the obstruction's development.
