Cystic hygroma is a legacy term for a type of lymphatic malformation, a benign congenital anomaly characterized by fluid-filled cystic masses resulting from abnormal development of the lymphatic system. The modern preferred term is 'lymphatic malformation.' These lesions most commonly occur in the neck and head region and are present at birth or develop early in life.
