Fong Disease
๐Overview
Fong Disease is a legacy clinical term for a hereditary disorder characterized by physical abnormalities involving the fingernails, kneecaps, elbows, and pelvic bones. This condition is caused by mutations in the LMX1B gene and is typically inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning a single copy of the altered gene is sufficient to cause the disorder.
While the condition is historically associated with skeletal and nail changes, it may also involve other systems, such as the kidneys or eyes. The modern medical community generally prefers the term Nail-Patella Syndrome to describe this multisystem genetic syndrome.
