Functioning Carcinoid
๐Overview
Functioning carcinoid is a legacy term referring to neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) that actively secrete hormones causing clinical symptoms. The modern preferred term is 'functioning neuroendocrine tumor.' These tumors most commonly arise in the gastrointestinal tract or lungs and produce bioactive substances such as serotonin, leading to carcinoid syndrome. Functioning NETs differ from non-functioning NETs, which do not secrete hormones or cause systemic symptoms.
