Geographic Atrophy
๐Overview
Geographic Atrophy is an advanced stage of dry age-related macular degeneration characterized by the progressive deterioration of the retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors. This process leads to the formation of well-defined areas of cellular loss within the macula, the region of the eye responsible for central vision.
The condition is a primary cause of irreversible vision loss in older adults. As the areas of atrophy expand, they can significantly impair the ability to perform tasks requiring detailed sight, though peripheral vision often remains unaffected.
