๐Overview
A hordeolum, commonly referred to as a stye, involves an acute infection of the sebaceous glands within the eyelash follicle or the meibomian glands. This condition is characterized by the sudden appearance of a tender, erythematous nodule along the eyelid.
The condition is categorized as either external or internal depending on which glands are affected. It is clinically distinct from a chalazion, which represents a chronic, non-infectious inflammatory lesion of the eyelid.
