Infectious Chorea
๐Overview
Infectious chorea is a descriptive term historically used to refer to chorea caused by infections. The most recognized modern equivalent is Sydenham chorea, a neurological disorder resulting from an autoimmune reaction following group A streptococcal infection (rheumatic fever). Infectious chorea may also occur secondary to other infections affecting the central nervous system. This condition is characterized by rapid, involuntary, irregular movements and is considered a post-infectious autoimmune phenomenon rather than a direct infection of the brain.
