📋Overview
Lyme disease is a tick-borne infectious disease caused primarily by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi in North America and Borrelia afzelii or Borrelia garinii in Europe and Asia. It is transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (Ixodes species). Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Early recognition and treatment are important to prevent progression to more severe systemic involvement.
