๐Overview
This condition involves the proliferation of specialized cells that infiltrate lung tissue, resulting in the destruction of healthy air sacs and the development of thin-walled cysts. It primarily affects women, particularly those of childbearing age, and can lead to a gradual decline in respiratory function as the cysts interfere with normal airflow.
The disease may occur as a sporadic condition or in association with tuberous sclerosis complex, a genetic disorder that causes noncancerous tumors to grow in various parts of the body. While the exact cause of the cell overgrowth is often linked to genetic mutations, the clinical presentation typically involves progressive lung involvement and may affect other organ systems.
