Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia - Medical Condition Information

Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia

Kartagener Syndrome

📋Overview

This genetic condition leads to impaired mucociliary clearance, often resulting in chronic respiratory infections and sinusitis. In some instances, the dysfunction of these microscopic structures can also lead to situs inversus, a condition where the internal organs are positioned in a mirror image of their normal arrangement.

Previously known as immotile cilia syndrome, the disorder involves defects in the movement of cilia that are essential for maintaining clear airways. Clinical observation of these symptoms typically begins in early childhood due to the persistent nature of the respiratory challenges involved.
