It is a legacy term often used interchangeably with superficial thrombophlebitis when involving superficial veins. The modern preferred terms distinguish between superficial thrombophlebitis and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) depending on the vein involved. The condition involves vein inflammation and clot formation, typically in the legs.
