๐Overview
Thrush, also known as oropharyngeal candidiasis, is a condition caused by an overgrowth of Candida fungi, primarily Candida albicans, within the mouth and throat. This fungus typically exists in small amounts on the skin and inside the body without causing harm, but changes in the local environment can trigger a proliferation that results in visible white patches.
These lesions commonly appear on the tongue or inner cheeks and may occasionally spread to the roof of the mouth, gums, or tonsils. While the term remains widely recognized, clinical settings often prefer the more specific terminology of oral candidiasis to describe this fungal colonization of the oropharyngeal tissues.
