Allergic Reactions
Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported with amoxicillin. This can range in severity from mild diarrhea to fatal inflammation of the colon and may occur during treatment or several months after the medication is stopped.
Skin Rash and Mononucleosis
A high percentage of patients with mononucleosis who receive amoxicillin develop a skin rash. Because of this, amoxicillin is generally not recommended for patients who have or are suspected of having mononucleosis.
Drug Resistance
Using amoxicillin when it is not needed, such as for viral infections like the common cold, increases the risk of developing drug-resistant bacteria. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve early, to ensure the infection is fully treated and to prevent resistance.
Phenylketonuria (PKU)
Some forms of amoxicillin, such as chewable tablets, may contain phenylalanine. This is a concern for individuals with phenylketonuria who must limit their intake of this substance.
Liver Function
There have been reports of liver dysfunction and drug-induced liver injury associated with the use of amoxicillin. Healthcare providers may monitor liver function, especially in patients with pre-existing liver issues.
How to Take Amoxicillin
Amoxicillin is taken by mouth and is available in several forms, including capsules, tablets, chewable tablets, and a liquid suspension. It is usually taken at regular intervals, such as twice or three times a day, depending on the specific condition being treated. You may take this medication with or without food.
Administration Instructions
- Liquid Suspension: Shake the liquid well before each use to ensure the medication is evenly mixed. Use a marked measuring device, such as an oral syringe or medicine cup, to ensure the dose is accurate. You may mix the liquid dose with formula, milk, fruit juice, water, or ginger ale; if you do, ensure the entire mixture is consumed immediately.

Breastfeeding

Penicillin Allergy
