Approved Uses

Mechanism of Action

Umeclidinium

Umeclidinium is a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA), also known as an anticholinergic. Vilanterol

Anoro Ellipta is not a rescue medicine and will not replace a fast-acting inhaler for sudden breathing problems. Using long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists (LABA), such as vilanterol, in people with asthma increases the risk of asthma-related death. This medication is only approved for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is not indicated for asthma.

Cardiovascular Effects

The ingredients in this medication can produce significant cardiovascular effects, including increased pulse rate, elevated blood pressure, and heart rhythm changes. It should be used with caution in individuals with heart disease, high blood pressure, or seizure disorders.

Worsening of Existing Conditions

Paradoxical Bronchospasm

Like other inhaled medicines, Anoro Ellipta can cause a sudden, life-threatening tightening of the airways (bronchospasm) immediately after inhalation. If this occurs, the medication must be stopped immediately and alternative therapy should be started.

Allergic Reactions

Individuals with a severe hypersensitivity to milk proteins or any of the ingredients in the inhaler should not use this product, as serious allergic reactions can occur. Signs of a reaction may include skin rash, hives, or swelling of the face and mouth.

Metabolic and Endocrine Effects

Caution is advised for individuals with certain metabolic conditions. The medication may cause changes in blood sugar levels or decrease potassium levels in the blood, which can affect heart rhythm. It should also be used carefully by people with overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or severe liver impairment.

Pregnancy

Many medications are excreted in human milk, and there is a potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants. Patients should consult with a healthcare provider to decide whether to discontinue breastfeeding or discontinue the medication, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother's health.
