Allergic Reactions
Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported in patients receiving beta-lactam antibiotics. Kidney Function
Cefoxitin is primarily excreted by the kidneys. In patients with reduced kidney function, the total daily dosage should be adjusted to prevent the accumulation of the drug and potential toxicity. Monitoring of renal function may be appropriate during therapy, especially in severely ill patients receiving maximum doses or those also taking aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Antibiotic Resistance
Using cefoxitin without a confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infection is unlikely to provide benefit and may increase the risk of developing drug-resistant bacteria. Prolonged use may also result in the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, such as fungi.
Blood Clotting and Monitoring
Some cephalosporins have been associated with a decrease in prothrombin activity, which can affect blood clotting. Patients at higher risk include those with kidney or liver impairment, those with poor nutritional status, and those on prolonged antibiotic therapy. Monitoring of prothrombin time may be necessary for these individuals, and vitamin K may be administered if indicated.
Administration
Cefoxitin is administered as an injection into a large muscle or as an infusion into a vein. This medication is most often given by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinical setting. Frequency and Timing
