Tuberculosis Treatment
Rifampin is primarily used to treat all forms of tuberculosis (TB). Because TB bacteria can be difficult to eliminate, this medication is almost always used in combination with at least one other antituberculosis drug. Using multiple medications helps ensure the infection is fully treated and reduces the risk of the bacteria developing resistance to the drugs.
Meningitis Prevention
This medication is also used to treat asymptomatic carriers of Neisseria meningitidis. These are individuals who have the bacteria in their nose or throat but do not feel sick. Rifampin helps eliminate these bacteria to prevent the person from spreading the infection to others. It is important to note that rifampin is not used to treat an active meningitis infection.

Mechanism of Action

Common Side Effects

Intermittent Dosing Risks
Taking rifampin on an intermittent schedule (less than daily) may increase the risk of a flu-like syndrome, characterized by fever, chills, and muscle pain. In rare cases, this dosing pattern has been linked to serious complications like kidney failure or blood disorders.
Porphyria

If rifampin is administered during the final weeks of pregnancy, it can increase the risk of postnatal bleeding (hemorrhage) in both the mother and the newborn. In such cases, treatment with Vitamin K may be necessary to prevent or manage bleeding issues.

Rifampin is known to pass into breast milk. While it is often used by nursing mothers, the long-term effects on a breastfeeding infant are not fully established.
