Dr. Guthrie seems to be fairly knowledgeable about Rehab Medicine but lacks in bedside manner. He was totally out of touch with my needs in terms of my adjusting to my permanent disability. He was very negative about my possibilities for recovery and I left the hospital with a less than positive outlook for my future. Its a good thing he has a good team of rehab therapists and psychologists to make him look good.

Tends to over-do in technical explanations, very monotone. Not very helpful as far as on-going physio. support. Bedside manner is so-so...tends to be rather pessimistic.

Dr. John Guthrie, is a very arrogant doctor. He seems to think very high of himself. Even from my first consultation with him, I found him very unpleasend. I would be better off if my had my GP help them instead of this Dr.Guthrie. If you get a referal to him, don't come back for a follow if you feel uncomfortable with him.With my experience with him,I feel that he most certainly is not an asset to the city of Edmonton. I have seen other doctors with lesser credentials to their name out perform Guthrie any time. This said, He might be very good with patients. It is very likely that my experience was a mutual dislike from the very first time. After all some people are turned away from a job application, while others are hired right away. This is not different with doctor and patient relationship. Your experience with him might be wonderful.

I just wanted to add this to my previous comments on Dr. Guthry. Be very careful in dealing with this Dr. as in my case he has twisted my words to suite his reports. This man really seems to thin that he is all knowing. He has no problem stating things or twisting things that a patient might have said, either written or phone conversations. He did not like the fact that my wife was with me during the appointments. If you feel uneasy with this man than please seek consultation else where. I wasted a lot of time and frustration with this man who seems to think of himself as "God". I hope that is I'm allowed to add this information. I have known Dr.Guthrie for about 4 years and have seen him on both an inpatient & outpatient basis. The staff are excellent ~ knowledgeable & caring, willing to do whatever is necessary to assist. Generally speaking, the doctor was punctual. I find him very approachable and willing to help even if it is outside his specialty. He is willing to refer me to specialists and does what he can to speed up the process. He always explains test results & diagnoses thoroughly, and will answer any questions I have. And when he can't answer a question, he will find the information and get back to me. He is quite blunt & matter-of-fact, which may turn some people off. But in a doctor, I’m not looking for a friend or counselor, I’m looking for someone who I am confident is knowledgeable, competent, thorough and finds solutions to the medical concerns I have. Dr. Guthrie does all this.

When my ex-husband was first injured and left a quadriplegic, I, too, found Dr. Guthrie a bit cold. I quickly learned that he is truly a wonderful doctor and very caring. Yes, he is blunt, and yes, it can be off-putting, but if you pay attention, you’ll see that he cares. He gave my husband stellar treatment and I’m forever grateful to him. I’d also like to say that the staff (nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social worker) were remarkable. This was all back in 1995 but I remember the time spent at the Glenrose with tears, and warm gratitude.

Dr Guthrie was my Doctor in Glenrose in 2004 after becoming a paraplegic, and I loved his professionalism and outlook on life in general! He was blunt, but spoke the truth! I’m doing absolutely phenomenal in life, having him as my doc!

My daughter was under his care for several months as a patient at the Glenrose. He was always honest, could be blunt, but never sugar coating anything, even if difficult to hear. However, he was inher corner from the get go and pushed for whatever treatment she needed to improve her health. He spent lots of time talking with her and listening to her concerns. As a result of his care, and that of all of her care team at the Glenrose, she has regained her ability to walk and live independently. We are greatful for what Dr. Guthrie and his team have done for her. They never gave up on her and worked with her to achieve her goals.

Dr. Guthrie is the best doctor I’ve had. Speaking from the perspective of an out-patient, he is always willing to take a phone call and help in any way he is able. My most recent interactions with him have resulted in a drastic improvement to my quality of life. He was realistic and willing to be blunt about my circumstance, while offering a solution that other doctors either hadn’t thought of or were unwilling to suggest. If it weren’t for his honesty, as well as his willingness to “call in favours” & “stick his neck out” (as one other reviewer put it), my life would not be what it is today. I can’t overstate how valuable his role has been in both my recovery from and adjustment to a spinal cord injury!
And just a note: While I value these qualities, some do have difficulty with his direct approach, his honesty and his unwillingness to cater to unrealistic hope, particularly after a recent injury. Please take this into consideration when reading reviews. If you discount him on that basis, you may miss out on crucial help!

I found Dr. Guthrie to be very pompous, rude, and elitist. Dr.Joseph Mengele would be a better choice.
