I have known Dr.Guthrie for about 4 years and have seen him on both an inpatient & outpatient basis. The staff are excellent ~ knowledgeable & caring, willing to do whatever is necessary to assist. Generally speaking, the doctor was punctual. I find him very approachable and willing to help even if it is outside his specialty. He is willing to refer me to specialists and does what he can to speed up the process. He always explains test results & diagnoses thoroughly, and will answer any questions I have. And when he can’t answer a question, he will find the information and get back to me. He is quite blunt & matter-of-fact, which may turn some people off. But in a doctor, I’m not looking for a friend or counselor, I’m looking for someone who I am confident is knowledgeable, competent, thorough and finds solutions to the medical concerns I have. Dr. Guthrie does all this.

Very poor bedside manner, not very knowledgeable when it comes to problems outside his field of expertise. The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital would be much better off without his interference.

The guy didn’t even read my file and i had to wait 2 hours extra for my apointment. I went to him looking for answers and received none.

Dr. Guthrie, is impersonal and will only offer help if you give him full control. As a patient I felt like he was dealing with a piece of meat rather than a human being. I asked to be informed prior to performing any proceedures and was rejected as a patient.

I would like to advise all others to request an alternative doctor if you find yourself under this mans care. I am surprised that he is still allowed to practice and no one has shut him down yet. It is my opinion that this man is mentally abusive and preys on the weak, in a very clever way – under the guise of a professional. I recommend others to write an official letter to the College of Physicians and Surgeons (forms are online). He has done severe damage to many.

Don't believe any diagnosis from this doctor. In my case he misdiagnosed and was very pessimistic of my condition. I've continued to impove inspite of his options.

Guthrie is a micro-manager who continually over-steps his scope of practice. He thinks he is all-knowing and does not allow any point of view except his own, including from his own therapy team. He will never admit to being wrong regardless of the evidence provided. His communication style is barbaric at best - he will talk over you and not allow you to speak unless you agree with what he is saying. Even though he works in a Rehabilitation hospital, he will often state "in today's world, nobody gets rehab." He will also order his OT's and PT's to ignore physical gains which may progress to actual walking and tell them to concentrate solely on the provision of a power wheelchair. His knowledge base is built upon outdated research and he refuses to consider any new treatment techniques even if they are recommended by the rest of the therapy team. If you ever have the misfortune of requiring hospitalization at the Glenrose SCI/GN unit, I strongly recommend asking for Dr. Zaki instead!

This guy is completely rude and arrogant. Critical of things not within his scope of practice. He should think before he speaks. I would never recommend this doctor to anyone. BEWARE!

Dr. Guthrie's behaviour is unprofessional and, in my experience, unacceptable. I had the mis-fortune of being on the receiving end of one of his tirades. There was a miscommunication about a patient and he flew off the handle, assuming the worst, yelling, name-calling, literally vibrating with anger and breathing heavily, whilst red in the face. He refused to listen to my objections and was extremely contrary and abusive. I actually felt afraid. After I had bent over backwards to accommodate his demands, and although the miscommunication was on his end, there was no apology. Dr. Guthrie may justify his actions as in the best interest of his patients. However, his behaviour accomplishes exactly the opposite by isolating the rest of the medical team and resulting in many of them being afraid to speak up or make suggestions that may be in the patient's best interest. He is a detriment to the health system and, ultimately, to patient care.

When my ex-husband was first injured and left a quadriplegic, I, too, found Dr. Guthrie a bit cold. I quickly learned that he is truly a wonderful doctor and very caring. Yes, he is blunt, and yes, it can be off-putting, but if you pay attention, you'll see that he cares. He gave my husband stellar treatment and I'm forever grateful to him. I'd also like to say that the staff (nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social worker) were remarkable. This was all back in 1995 but I remember the time spent at the Glenrose with tears, and warm gratitude.
