DR. Barr has been my Ur0logist for many years I find him very knowledgeable. He has help me in many ways.

My experiences with Dr Barr are very different from some previous people. My first contact with Dr Barr was late Sept 2013, so I can’t comment on the previous receptionist.
The current one has always been pleasant, knowlegable and handles my appointments well and in a timely fashion. I was dealing with aggressive prostate cancer and (as it should be) Dr Barr was aggressive about it’s diagnosis and treatment. CATscans, bone scans and MRIs all within 30 days. He pushed hard for a quick OR time. Went well, no bleeding, zero pain. Due to non-related issues, kept me for 7 days in hospital rather than the usual 2-3 days. He has always been patient with us and made sure we understood every step of the process. Ensured a follow up with a radiologist. One year later, still in good health and working. If you are faced with this kind of cancer surgery, this is a doctor you may want on your team.

Reading the comments below have confirmed that what I have experienced in terms of how I’ve been treated are seemingly the norm. First of all the receptionist is incredibly rude. Second the lack of diligence is appalling. Basically anything they tell you in terms of timeline you can just forget as follow through is not their forte. After three months of having a stint in and calling several times for an appointment to have it removed, I received a call telling me that I had missed my appointment and that they called me two days prior. Now because he is apparently on vacation, they tell me that I can’t get in for another month. These people lack any compassion for the mental destruction that living with a stint can cause. They also seem unwilling to refer me to a different surgeon to speed the process up and get back to my active lifestyle. If you can avoid dealing with this office I recommend it.

Dr Barr operated on my husband 3 weeks ago. (TURP) Since that time my husband has had 2 infections and has never stopped bleeding. He was told to go to emergency as Dr Barr was the duty doctor. Dr Barr was informed by the triage nurse that my husband was in emergency to see him. The triage nurses paged him on several more. Ten hours later a nurse informed us that we had to to see an emergency doctor and that Doctor Barr would not see us. The emergency doctor who could not help my husband, phoned Barr and he lied to her saying he would phone my husband the next day. His condition was not helped by sitting on a hard chair in emergency for ten hours My husband continues to bleed. Dr Barr has not contacted him. Anyone dealing with Dr barr should be aware that he is uncaring and lies when it suits him. In the meantime my husband continues to bleed and pass clots. What can we do? We feel utterly abandoned.

He is obviously out of date on developments in Urology. He refuses to do basic diagnostic testing for some reason. Partly it may be because Alberta Health has policies to save money by doing nothing to help you. He is often late or puts you off with sick days. His (famously) extremely nasty secretary has been replaced in 2013 but the new one is also bad. He is totally uncaring when confronted with agonizing suffering and you’re basically told to go and die. For the really simple procedures that he does well, then maybe he does them well, but that isn’t my experience. If you can afford private care, for god sake go to another province/country for proper care.

Dr. Barr has been the urologist for my late father and subsequently for me and in my opinion he is outstanding in how he has handled our urlogical issues over several years.

Dr Barr is extremely knowledgeable and understanding to a patient's needs. He spends the time to listen to concerns and is easy to talk to on sensitive issues of the tissues. I'd highly recommend him

I am of two minds about him. On a personal level his is empathetic, compassionate, warm, witty and engaging. BUT. He is hard to get a hold of, even if you're hospitalized. His diagnosis of me was cancer - which over 4 to 5 days of being in the hospital was ruled out by several other doctors, and yet... he persisted with that diagnosis. On the other hand he has been of great help with my kidney stones. His staff is absolutely top notch.

This dude is such a dick. Fitting actually. Left me in severe pain for years, could barely move because he told me my condition was incurable when he was too inept to know the surgery I required. Total hack who believes his time is more valuable spent on things he knows about than his patient. I’d argue he violated my rights under the Canada health Act, but I’m not a lawyer, but I’ll be consulting one soon.
