Founded in 1891 as the California Home for the Care and Training of Feeble Minded Children, it was one of California's oldest and largest developmental centers. Over its 127-year history, SDC served thousands of residents, evolving its care models from institutionalization to more person-centered approaches. The center officially closed on December 1, 2018, as part of a statewide initiative to transition individuals with developmental disabilities into community-based settings. The former campus is now undergoing a long-term planning process for future use.
