It was founded in 1861 as the Iowa Hospital for the Insane at Mount Pleasant. The facility provided long-term psychiatric care for over 150 years before it was closed by the State of Iowa in 2015 due to budget cuts and changing mental healthcare policies. As of 2015, it had approximately 50 beds.
