Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
๐Overview
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome occurs when fluid leaks into the tiny, elastic air sacs of the lungs, which severely limits the amount of oxygen that enters the bloodstream. This inflammatory process typically develops rapidly in response to a significant injury or underlying illness, leading to acute respiratory failure.
The condition is clinically defined by the sudden onset of low blood oxygen levels and widespread lung infiltrates that are not caused by heart failure. This disruption in gas exchange prevents vital organs from receiving the oxygen they need to function properly.
