📋Overview
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease, is a neurodegenerative prion disease affecting cattle. It is a type of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE). The modern preferred term for the human form linked to BSE exposure is variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). BSE is characterized by progressive brain damage leading to neurological symptoms in affected cattle. Human infection occurs through consumption of contaminated beef products.
