📋Overview
Chagas disease, also referred to as American trypanosomiasis, is an inflammatory condition caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. It is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with the waste of triatomine insects, often known as kissing bugs, though transmission may also occur through other clinical routes such as blood transfusions or during pregnancy.
The infection typically progresses through acute and chronic phases and has the potential to affect the heart, digestive system, and neurological pathways. While initial symptoms might be mild or absent, untreated cases can lead to serious health concerns in the years following the initial infection.
