📋Overview
Cold sores, also known as herpes labialis, are small, fluid-filled blisters that typically appear on or around the lips. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), and less commonly by HSV-2. Cold sores are contagious and tend to recur due to viral latency in nerve cells. The term 'cold sores' is a common name; the preferred medical term is herpes labialis.
