๐Overview
Extrauterine pregnancy, now more commonly referred to as an ectopic pregnancy, involves the attachment of a fertilized egg to a site other than the uterine lining. Implantation typically occurs in a fallopian tube, the structure that carries eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.
While the fallopian tube is the most common site, this condition can also occur in an ovary, the cervix, or the abdominal cavity. Because these tissues cannot support a growing pregnancy, the condition is regarded as a serious clinical situation requiring medical attention.
