Folate Deficiency Anemia
๐Overview
Folate deficiency anemia is a type of megaloblastic anemia caused by insufficient folate (vitamin B9) levels, leading to impaired DNA synthesis and the production of abnormally large red blood cells. It is distinct from vitamin B12 deficiency anemia but shares similar hematologic features. Folate deficiency anemia is the modern preferred term, replacing older or less specific labels such as 'folic acid deficiency anemia.'
