Folic acid deficiency anemia is a type of megaloblastic anemia caused by insufficient folate (vitamin B9) levels, leading to impaired red blood cell production and resulting in large, immature red blood cells. It is distinct from vitamin B12 deficiency anemia but shares similar hematologic features. The modern preferred term is folate deficiency anemia.
