Giant Axonal Neuropathy
GAN
📋Overview
Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN) is a rare inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive damage to the peripheral and central nervous systems. It is caused by mutations in the GAN gene, leading to abnormal accumulation of neurofilaments within nerve axons, resulting in their enlargement (giant axons). GAN primarily affects motor and sensory nerves, causing severe neuropathy and neurological decline. The term 'Giant Axonal Neuropathy' is the current preferred name and is not a legacy or synonym for another condition.
