Hydatidiform Mole
๐Overview
This condition, also known as a molar pregnancy, is a type of gestational trophoblastic disease that occurs when an egg and sperm join incorrectly at fertilization. This error results in the growth of abnormal placental tissue within the uterus instead of a healthy fetus.
These pregnancies are typically categorized as either complete or partial based on the genetic makeup and the presence of fetal tissue. While the growth is noncancerous in most instances, it represents a form of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia that requires clinical monitoring to ensure the abnormal tissue is fully addressed.
