๐Overview
Kernicterus is a rare but serious type of brain damage caused by very high levels of unconjugated bilirubin in newborns. It is a legacy term historically used to describe bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunction. The modern preferred term is bilirubin encephalopathy, which encompasses both acute and chronic neurological effects of severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.
