Pump lung is a legacy term historically used to describe a severe form of acute respiratory failure characterized by widespread lung injury and impaired gas exchange, often related to mechanical circulatory support devices such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or ventricular assist devices (VADs). The modern preferred terms include acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and device-associated lung injury. It refers to lung complications arising in the context of cardiopulmonary support.
