Scalded Skin Syndrome
๐Overview
Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome, also known as SSSS, is a clinical condition resulting from an infection with specific strains of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. These bacteria release exfoliative toxins that target the superficial layers of the skin, causing the epidermis to separate from the underlying tissue.
The condition typically manifests as extensive skin redness followed by the formation of fluid-filled blisters that easily rupture. The resulting skin loss often gives the appearance of a thermal injury or scald, though the damage is primarily limited to the outermost skin layers.
