๐Overview
This condition, also referred to as pityriasis versicolor, occurs when a specific type of fungus known as Malassezia grows on the skin surface. The resulting patches may appear lighter or darker than the surrounding skin and are frequently observed on the trunk and shoulders.
While the fungus is a normal inhabitant of healthy skin, certain factors can lead to an overgrowth that disrupts typical pigmentation. This superficial infection is generally considered a common dermatological concern rather than a sign of poor hygiene or a contagious illness.
