Approved Uses

Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

Asthma

It is used as an add-on maintenance treatment for moderate-to-severe asthma in adults and children. Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps

In adults, Dupixent is used with other medicines to treat chronic sinus inflammation accompanied by nasal polyps. It helps reduce the size of nasal polyps and improves symptoms like congestion and loss of smell.

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)

Dupixent is used to treat eosinophilic esophagitis in adults and children. This is a chronic immune system disease where the esophagus becomes inflamed, often making it difficult or painful to swallow food.

Prurigo Nodularis

It is used to treat adults with prurigo nodularis, a skin condition that causes hard, extremely itchy lumps to form on the skin.

Mechanism of Action

Dupixent is a biologic medication known as a monoclonal antibody. It works by targeting the underlying cause of inflammation in the body rather than just treating symptoms on the surface. Specifically, it blocks the signaling of two proteins called interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13).

These proteins are part of the immune system and are responsible for triggering a specific type of overactive immune response known as type 2 inflammation. When the body produces too much of these proteins, it can lead to various chronic conditions, such as:

• Atopic dermatitis: Causes itchy, inflamed skin and rashes.
• Asthma: Leads to swollen and constricted airways and increased mucus.
• Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis: Results in growths in the nasal passages and sinus inflammation.
• Eosinophilic esophagitis: Causes inflammation in the esophagus, making it difficult to swallow.

By binding to a specific receptor on the surface of cells, Dupixent prevents IL-4 and IL-13 from attaching and sending their inflammatory signals. This interruption helps to decrease the overall level of inflammation in the body, which can lead to clearer skin, improved lung function, or reduced nasal polyps depending on the condition being treated.

Common Side Effects

Eye Problems

This medication is associated with new or worsening eye issues. Patients should report symptoms such as:

• Eye pain or redness
• Changes in vision
• Itching or dryness

Asthma and Corticosteroids

Individuals with asthma should not change or stop their asthma medications without consulting a healthcare professional. If Dupixent is used alongside corticosteroids, the steroid dose should be reduced gradually under medical supervision rather than stopped abruptly.

Joint Pain

Some people experience new or worsening joint pain while taking this drug. In some cases, this pain may be severe enough to limit mobility.

Parasitic Infections

• Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyposis: As an add-on maintenance treatment for adults with inadequately controlled disease.
• Eosinophilic Esophagitis: For adults and pediatric patients 1 year of age and older, weighing at least 15 kg.
• Prurigo Nodularis: For the treatment of adult patients.
