Great doctor - very kind and to the point. He is a very busy man but always had time to explain anything to me, he even called me a week before surgery when I had a small question about it, taking time out of his busy day. My surgery was rebooked several times (the man does emergency and oncall work, so you will be bumped if something more dire comes up), he removed my gall bladder and a pancreatic cyst - ended up being a bigger procedure than expected, but he visted my hospital bed right away to explain the details and always checked up on me when he could. Very happy with the followup as well. The man knows his stuff! He may seem a little rushed, but he has a lot of appointments to get through - and if you ask him anything, he will take the time to answer.

Dr. James Shapiro is a great doctor. He has a lot on his plate and is only human like all other doctors on the planet, but he is extremely knowledgable, kind and generous. I am grateful for his tenacity and the contribution to science and research. I’d like to see other people under that amount of constant pressure do a better job.

I was with a family member recently for their consult appt with this surgeon, was a long wait for a very brief appt with this doctor. Not sure if what we dealt with was because he was already hours behind but he rushed us into his office by yelling out from his desk “Who is next? ” . He still had the previous patient’s diagnostic imaging result list up on the giant tv screen in his office. Had not reviewed my family member’s history before the appt, asked 3 questions, pulled up our results on the computer with that same large screen displaying as he searched our last name so we saw the name of every patient with the same initials as he searched. After brief review of the tumour tyoe, he then stated he wouldn’t recommend surgery, was terse and aggravated when we asked questions. Then he started recording his dictation before we had fully left our chairs. He may be a gifted surgeon but the privacy breaches we saw would have kept us from going back even if he had been compassionate and well mannered. If you see this doctor I would strongly suggest you ask him to close your chart or at the very least close the mirror/Bluetooth connection to that large screen before you leave his office to protect your privacy.

Dr Shapiro is a very kind and knowledgefull doctor. He treats his patients with respect and listens to what you have to say. I am very happy to have him as a doctor. He even made time to see me outside his clinic time.

Not sure what to think…my brief consultation was in sept 2017. This man has way too many irons in the fire. Unless you have cancer, need an organ transplant or have a surgical emergency….expect multiple postponements & cancellations. It is not only an inconvenience for the patient and their family, but it ends up being very expensive especially when you live 2 hours outside of Edmonton. Not sure if he has a callegue who takes over if something unforeseen happens. Obviously something needs to be done. I’ve spent five months waiting. If he doesn’t have time he should refer me to someone else.
