Dr. Smyth is so knowledgeable, yet has a no-nonsense approach that I appreciate, thus makes practical recommendations.

She made me feel worse then I already do about myself. She is the 6th neuro to diagnose me with ms. Then it’s like 5 years later and they turn it around on you like your faking your symptoms. I am tired of this back and forth game. Do you just not bother going anymore?

I have never met such a condescending, unprofessional physician. I am shocked she is still in practice and even more shocked to have learned she is responsible for professionalism at the U of A. She was paternalistic, disregarded my wishes and disrespected me and my family when we asked for clarifications. I hope she doesn't practice for much longer and is removed from her faculty position. It is no surprise she was being investigated in BC.

She let me know everything straight up. Asked me how I wanted to deal with everything. She was gracious with my wife who had questions. Really given the situation she was amazing. I feel okay with everything.

Dr Penney is very supportive of her patients needs in regards to medications and is very empathetic when comes to listening. This means she is good at pharmacy to mask the problem and good at social work. I suggest you research her name and reputation further.

She was very vague with answers to my concerns. I always feel she is inattentive and ignoring me. She advises follow up and then forgets she requested a follow up. I do not think she really and truly has a caring heart. On a more specific note; my last visit with her was in February and she said she thought I should be referred to a RHEUMATOLOGIST for further evaluation. She said I should give her a few weeks to get this in place. Well my conditions and symptoms are worse than they have ever been over the course of the past year, and Dr, Penelope Smyth has not contacted me with any form of a referral to a Rheumatologist YET. This is how it always is with her. If I don’t contact her she TOTALLY FORGETS ABOUT ME. Not what I would call PROFESSIONAL AT ALL.

Dr Smyth is usually on time and her staff will allow you to see only her and not a medical student or resident first if you request it. She knowns the basics of MS, but seems a lot more interested in helping people get pregnant than in treating their MS. Dismissive if you do not want children, and not willing to listen to your concerns. Very cursory history and often no physical. Doesn’t give you time to express your concerns, and when you try will cut you off with her opinion. Keen on keeping people on treatment and won’t listen long enough to the reasons you don’t wish to continue. Over reliance on MRI despite not changing her treatment plan based on it – why do a test if it won’t change what you do? Told me it was a “baseline” even though I’d had previous ones done, and now wants to repeat it “just to check”.

I have been a patient of Dr. Smyth for 3yrs and am very pleased with her. I never feel rushed and she is open to discussion on available treatments for my level of MS. She/staff are quick to respond to my calls. I have yearly appointments booked with her. ???
