📋Overview
Chickenpox is the common name for varicella, a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It primarily affects children but can occur at any age. The term 'chickenpox' is a legacy name; the preferred medical term is varicella. The infection is characterized by a distinctive itchy rash with vesicles and systemic symptoms. After initial infection, the virus can remain dormant and later reactivate as herpes zoster (shingles).
