๐Overview
Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral infection caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. After initial infection, the virus remains dormant in nerve tissue and can reactivate later in life, causing a painful, localized rash typically following a dermatomal distribution.
