Familial Adenomatous Polyposis - Medical Condition Information

Familial Adenomatous Polyposis

FAPMultiple Polyposis of the Colon

📋Overview

Familial Adenomatous Polyposis is a hereditary disorder caused by mutations in the APC gene, resulting in the development of hundreds or thousands of adenomatous polyps. These growths typically begin to appear during adolescence or early adulthood, predominantly within the colon and rectum.

Without clinical intervention, these polyps often progress to colorectal cancer as individuals age. This condition is classified among hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes and was historically identified by several different names before the current clinical terminology was standardized.
