Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
๐Overview
Mucous membrane pemphigoid is a rare autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the basement membrane zone of the body's mucosal surfaces. This process leads to the development of subepithelial blisters, primarily affecting areas such as the oral cavity, conjunctiva of the eyes, nasal passages, and genital regions.
This condition, previously referred to as cicatricial pemphigoid, involves the production of autoantibodies that target specific proteins responsible for adhering the outer layer of tissue to the underlying structure. While it predominantly involves the mucous membranes, clinical observations indicate that the skin may also be involved in some instances.
