๐Overview
This long-term autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium, the lining of the membranes surrounding the joints. This process results in persistent inflammation that can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness, often affecting the small joints in the hands and feet first. Over time, rheumatoid arthritis can lead to joint deformity and bone erosion. Unlike the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.
