Transverse Myelitis
๐Overview
This inflammatory syndrome targets the myelin sheath protecting nerve fibers, often resulting in motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction below the level of the spinal lesion. It may develop following viral or bacterial infections, or as a result of autoimmune processes where the body's immune system attacks its own central nervous system tissues.
The condition is classified as a clinical syndrome rather than a single disease and can occur as an isolated event or in association with other multisystem disorders. While the exact cause is sometimes unidentified, the neurological symptoms are a direct result of the inflammatory damage to the spinal cord's neural pathways.
