๐Overview
This condition occurs when a hole forms in the interventricular septum, the muscular wall dividing the left and right ventricles. This opening allows oxygenated blood to flow from the left ventricle back into the right ventricle instead of out to the rest of the body.
The size and location of the defect can vary significantly, which influences how much blood shunts between the chambers and the degree of impact on the heart and lungs. It is frequently identified as one of the most common heart defects present at birth.
